Fond memories from Janet & Giles Phillips

Created by Sarah 3 years ago

We’ve known Jill, and Tim of course, since Exeter student days and we’ve kept in touch since then including spending many weekends together. We both remember Jill as one of the warmest, kindest people we’ve known. She was always thoughtful of other peoples situations and points of view, would always take an interest in our family’s issues when we met or corresponded, and has always had a lovely laugh and sense of humour.

We have lots of happy memories from when Jill first arrived in Exeter, in 1966 I think, to join Tim at Silverton. And she joined in with us other postgrads and partners socially playing squash at a games evening we used to have each week. We remember losing them to Canada for two or three years but corresponding together. Jill wrote very good letters. And then when they came to England, getting together again with young children round our ankles, Dickon and Sarah and our two boys. Then, there were the occasional map reading challenges at orienteering events. Time we spent more with Jill, Dickon and Sarah while Tim took on his tougher grade competitions. Later, when Dickon and Sarah had left home, we spent weekends together walking and talking during the day and then drinking gin and tonics at gin o’clock, followed by the delicious and relaxing meals together while we put the world to rights.

I remember, in particular, when we visited them once, when all our children were very small, probably soon after Tim and Jill returned from Canada. We didn’t have the luxury of disposable nappies in those days, and instead had to soak the terry towelling ones in a bucket of disinfectant solution while they were waiting to be washed. I remember that the disgusting contents of the bucket somehow got tipped up over the carpet. I was absolutely mortified, but Jill, of course, was so kind helping to clean it up saying, “It was an old carpet anyway” which we were sure it wasn’t. And we still remember the obligatory glass of sherry at the children’s bath time. Happy days. Over the years, Jill and I shared a lot of common interests in art, psychology, counselling etc and I thought of Jill as a special friend. Jill was an inspiration to me in many ways. We will miss you Jill.
